Growing up, we are told of the importance of protecting our skin. Staying out of the sun, buying countless amounts of eye creams and moisturizers, and getting regular facials is something I pride myself on. Something I’m not so proud of is protecting another area of skin- my scalp! Did you know that you are supposed to care for your scalp the same way as you care for your hair? Yep…it’s true! As much as I love a good extension job, natural is always better and wouldn’t you rather protect you hair now so it looks great later? After speaking with professionals, and doing hours of research, I now know the right ways to protect my hair!
First, minimize the heat. If you’re anything like me, you spend countless hours blow drying, flat ironing, and curling your hair. Well, did you know that these tools actually zap the moisture right out of your locks? To prevent this, use a deep conditioner once or twice a week, and try adding products to your routine that mimic hairs missing keratin. You’ll need to use something that fills in the spots that are tarnished from all your heat styling.
You take care of the skin on your face and body, right? So, why not take care of your scalp? Try a hair product with argon oil, bur oil, or grape seed extract to give your scalp exactly what it needs. Also, vitamins C and E work wonders on a dry and poorly nourished scalp!
Not only does stress cause breakouts on your skin, it also causes a major problem for hair! Think of hair as its own little circulatory system- with stress, each piece of hair becomes rigid and tight. Stress also speeds up adrenaline production, which causes hair to fall out. Try relaxing exercises, prescription anti-androgen treatments, and get the right amount of sleep.
We all watch what we eat for reasons having nothing to do with hair, but in reality, hair needs nutrition, and what better way to get it from the food you eat? Try a diet centered around protein, iron, zinc, and antioxidants. Eating well (and green) will have positive effects on your hair, and you will definitely see a transformation. In addition, try supplements like Vitamin K and Cysteine, a protein building block (these produce that missing keratin your hair and scalp need). Iron and zinc also prevent hair from thinning- so go ahead, give it a whirl!
If you’re into a fast fix, run to the nearest salon! Tell your stylist that you want side swept bangs and layers- these will definitely give your locks a sense of fullness. In addition, coloring your hair aids in bulking up the hair shaft, so now’s a perfect time to get those dark hues you’ve been pondering for months!
