A packed audience gathered in the stage tent at the tailend of NYFW to see the latest collection from Milly. Among the sea of editors, journalists and buyers, Olympic golden boy and fashion aficionado, Ryan Lochte was in attendance working the crowd and possibly getting inspired for a sartorial endeavor of his own?
Designer Michelle Smith centered her SS13 collection on a homogenized mix of ultra feminine and tough athletic wear pieces. The palette ranged from warm buttercup yellows and tangerines to electric neon hues and embossed metallics. Stark whites and iridescent fabrics hinted at a futuristic influence as well.
Smith showed a wide range through her use of various fabrics, textures and cuts. Laser cut jackets, exposed zippers, muted sweater sets with neon pipping, bold prints and dainty satin racerback dresses and tanks paired over sports bras all filled down the runway. Simple ponytails, electric eyeliner and chemistry goggles completed the looks.
Classic pieces like mesh tops, lace tanks, a plastic poncho and techno windbreaker were wearable and added texture and dimension to the collection.
A few key pieces such as a sportier take on the classic Chanel tweed suit turned heads. Smith explained backstage, “It’s not your grandmother’s Chanel.” The hooded bomber blends navy and neon green and combines the perfect amount of femininity and modern toughness as seen through the entire collection. Another successful look was the white futuristic pant suit with neon racing stripes.
The highlight piece, however, was the animal embossed metallic pencil skirt, a sexy necessity for every spring wardrobe. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Milly show without an adorable, saccharine sweet reunion of Smith and her daughter at the fianle.
