“My last collection was inspired by ancient Egypt. I started thinking about the story of Exodus with Moses leaving the desert. I thought it would be interesting to explore collections that had some dark undertones or some religious themes to it. Religious themes that are universal religious themes; themes that aren’t necessarily Muslim, Christian or Jewish themes…they are kind of something that is born of that region and have developed a monastic look. “ – Mike Vensel
“Exodus” is the Spring Summer 2013 collection by Los Angeles based designer, artist and producer (Concept Los Angeles), Mike Vensel. The collection is inspired by the mass migration of the human race in search of a better life and freedom from religious restraints. The collection picks up where Vensel’s previous collection ended. Traveling back to Egypt, on a journey through the desert where a blank-slate is established, a new world is born.
Through Vensel’s designs and vision, a story unfolds of women dressed in hooded, veiled and caped monastic themed garments that walk the runway. The simplistic-elegance of Vensel’s collection is composed primarily of silk charmeuse, chiffon and modal. Each garment displays Vensel’s true genius with drape, as beautiful silhouettes take shape and possess a fluidity and movement when met with air.
“I spent six months doing research and really working on the concept of the collection. It’s an A to Z process, there’s creativity involved with every aspect of it”. – Mike Vensel
In keeping with Vensel’s previous color palette the designer chose pure white, cobalt blue, and obsidian black as the primary make up of the collection. The designer also chose to interject muted colors as well. Vensel’s Spring Summer 2013 collection demands to be worn, it simply—demands to be lived in.
Matte silk charmeuse layered over modal forms the majority of the collection. Each look transfixed the audience, as models walked the runway. The collection stayed true to the designer’s aesthetic and was distinctly, Vensel. To learn more about the collection seen above please visit: www.mikevensel.com
