Shannon Gogerchin of Patrick Shannon
LA fashion designers look out! Shannon Gogerchin is in the prime of her fashion career. Like myself, she is a fellow FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) Alumni. FIDM was just the start of her extensive career in the fashion industry. Shannon is based in Los Angeles and has created a line of luxury evening clutches and handbags called, Patrick Shannon. The collection balances style with sophistication, while emphasizing the use of quality materials. I am excited she is sharing her story with us today!
Designer Background Summary:
Originally from Chicago, Shannon has lived in both New York City and Los Angeles and has lent her design talents to top fashion houses such as Coach, Betsy Johnson and BCBG Max Azria Group. The experience of living in such dynamic cities – which are known for being cultural and social melting pots – has invariably left a mark on Shannon and ultimately shaped her vision as a designer. Like the cities she’s lived in, the collection blends cool with sophisticated, edgy with delicate, and bohemian with Rock and Roll. The spirit of each city is palpable. It is this spirit which flows seamlessly through the Patrick Shannon collection.
After graduating from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and spending several years designing for other fashion brands, Shannon noticed a void in the market for luxury evening bags, that are moderately priced. The Patrick Shannon collection aims to fill this gap by reflecting her personal design philosophy, to marry high quality and accessibility. Shannon has applied this visionary approach in every step of defining and developing the brand, by using the highest quality materials and hardware components that are all crafted by hand.
Drawing from her passion for vintage clothing and jewelry, and musical taste that ranges from Punk to Folk, she has managed to blend the west coast bohemian spirit with New York City’s edge. The Patrick Shannon collection seamlessly crosses boundaries, and embodies the spirit of a woman who is complex – at once sophisticated and charming, yet tough as nails.
How did you start your company?
With savings and determination!
How would you describe your design style?
Bohemian with a rock n’ roll edge.
What are the best and worst things about being a designer?
Best: Working for yourself and having the freedom that comes with that. Not only for your designs but scheduling.
Worst: Everything other than the joy of designing. Owning and running a business – it is very difficult to balance all the components involved.
What are the things you like most about your career?
The creativity. I am constantly inspired, so I am lucky I have a career where it always has a place to be used.
What are some of your top sources of inspiration?
I grew up around antique stores so vintage plays a huge role. My mom loved to go antique shopping every weekend and while she was looking for unique home décor I was trolling through costume jewelry, bags and furs. I also have a very eclectic group of friends, I am constantly inspired by them and their style.
What is a typical day like?
Lots of emailing! I’m also always sourcing and looking ahead. Once I have designed one Season I am already onto the next.
What are some of your greatest accomplishments?
My 3 year old son, Kai, who makes my life sweeter every day.
I think the rest are my little secrets, but if I win a CFDA Award you will know that was one of them!
