Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2014: Can you Spell WANG?
The Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2014 show had Wang written all over it. The show was held in a pitch black club-like warehouse space in New York City which served as a graphic backdrop for Wang’s collection. Models strutted to hip-hop songs by Mya, Mary J Blige, and Method Man. The scene was dominated by celeb A-listers Kanye West, Courtney Love, Solange Knowles, Kerry Washington, and Natasha Lyonne all of whom sat front row.
The show also had a special appearance by Wang’s stylish niece sporting a ‘Parental Advisory’ tee similar to the one modeled on the runway.
From laser cut leather and lace to woven houndstooth and jacquard, it was all about branding and the revival of the ‘90s logomania. “[Logomania] was the height of me in high school, reading and obsessing over [magazines] and being a fashion geek,” said Wang on the main inspiration of his collection. Leather opera gloves, crop tops, and trench coats were among the pieces that had Wang’s name punched into them. But, the real reason behind the logo mania was Wang’s nostalgia for a time when “fashion was really fun, when there was wit and humor, and it wasn’t so serious.”
Aside from the branding and logomania which served as the foundation of Wang’s collection, there were also hints of the concept of censorship, cults, and youth culture. As Wang explained, the collection was all about “playing with the duality of something understated and something graphic, something innocent and something perverse.” Some key pieces from the entire collection include ruffled baby doll dresses cut from menswear suiting fabrics, preppy skirts, boxer-like shorts, laser cut leather dresses, and a much-talked about ‘Parental Advisory’ sweatshirt.
Through Wang’s latest collection, he once again showed the fashion world why he had been proclaimed a fashion prodigy below thirty. The many notable techniques he used to brand his pieces were a clear show of his talent. And with yet another successful collection, there is no doubt that come spring, the streets will be dominated by the name of Wang, Alexander Wang.
