Hollywood Costume Designer, Greg Lavoi presented his Spring 2014 collection at the beautiful Kyoto Gardens, Los Angeles where the designer brought back to life the classic designs of the tragic Los Angeles costume designer Irene Lentz Gibbons. Lavoi brings Irene back to life in his classic tailored and fitted glamorous designs. Irene Lentz Gibbons, an Academy Awards costume designer to the Hollywood golden age stars such as Doris Day and Lana Turner is famous for her “high-waisted shorts”. She dressed the famous starlets, fashionistas and screen stars from the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s. Always using the finest of imported fabrics such Italian silks, cashmeres, wools, from Belgium and Great Britain. Greg Lavoi wrote a book about the late costume designer’s tragic and glamorous life, which has inspired a collection with her name on it. Greg Lavoi, the twice Emmy Award nominee who’s dressed the glamorous women of Hollywood celebrities such Vanessa Williams, Zoe Saldana, and Kristen Davis just to name a few. Now the designer is bringing Irene’s fashion legacy back and on the runway! In recreating the House of Irene Greg Lavoi follows the same practices as Irene by only selecting the best fabrics, keeping her signature style, clean simple lines, tailored suits and her feminine sculpted dresses.
Lavoi captures Irene’s timeless style and recreates her “California Couture” that was forgotten. For his spring 2014 collection he is using color palettes of soft pastel greens, bold electric blues, pops of yellows, pinks and feminine florals while keeping the sophisticated classic glamour neutrals of blacks and whites. With the retro style golden age glamour of the 1930’s 1940’s, and 1950’s added with a modern twist, his collection that was seen on the runway was absolutely breathless. The designer did a fantastic job at recreating Irene’s vintage glamour while adding a touch of his own modern style. I got to admit I love the trench coat in black and white because it is classic elegance that never goes out of style. Another favorite of mine was the white lace mini dress with that romantic lace and black flower detail adds a touch of vintage flair and femininity. Black and white seems to add to the classic look while the bold colors add a pop of spring into the collection.
The collection had a variety of designs ranging from evening wear, to cocktail dresses, to day out on the town glamour to businesswoman attire. The feminine cuts of the dresses were very reminiscent of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s eras. The beautiful collection included some of Irene’s signature high-waisted shorts with splashes of bold spring colors and strips. There seems to be a lot of attention to detail in this collection with lace, polka dots, patterns, strips, floral patterns and stunning embroidery. Simple one-color gowns add to the simplicity and clean simple lines. Gorgeous tailored fitted suits in bold colors while adding a touch of glamour and femininity to the collection. The beautiful surrounding gardens were a perfect setting to the springtime theme.
